Police Appeal Over Hanwood Arson

Police are investigating an arson attack on a joinery workshop near Shrewsbury which caused up to £400,000 damage.

They issued an appeal  for information following the fire at Niblett Bespoke Joinery based at Edgebold, near Hanwood.

The business shares the old dairy depot site with several other firms alongside the A488.

Police were alerted by the fire service that they were attending a serious fire in a commercial building thought to be of dubious origin.

Extensive damage was caused to the building, including the roof and machinery inside. Estimated damage is initially believed to be between £300,000 and £400,000.

It's thought a quantity of timber outside the premises was deliberately set alight. The fire then spread to the building.

A West Mercia Police spokesperson said: "The fire is being treated as arson and we are appealing for any information which might assist the investigation.

"This is a fairly isolated location on the outskirts of the village of Hanwood but the site is situated alongside the main A488 Shrewsbury to Bishop's Castle road. We are anxious to hear from passers-by who spotted anything suspicious in that vicinity.

"The number to call is Shrewsbury police station on 0300 333 3000, or the anonymous Crimestoppers number, 0800 555 111."
